Summer has hit, we're out of school and it's time to hang out and do all the things we wished we could have done during the school year. For some of us, checking out the mall and local shops is the highlight of our vacation, while spending our summer job cash on all the cool things we see. Some of you, I know, are dying to sink your teeth (or should we say ears?) into the latest music, expanding your horizons and showing off your musical tastes to your buds. So, Zone Tones has collected some of the Must Have albums this summer for your listening pleasure.
The Januaries Self-Titled Foodchain Records
The Januaries are too cool for words. While most of us wouldn't know what the description Bardot meets The Doors means, this band makes music everyone can enjoy (your mom won't be telling you to turn down this record!) while staying away from the manufactured pop sound that's currently being played on the airwaves. Led by singer/guitarist Debbie Diamond, The Januaries pump out such songs like Black Transmission, All Systems a Go Go and Cinema Girl. The self-titled debut is perfect for dances, parties and when you're in the mood to smooch that special someone.
Want to read a recent interview with Debbie Diamond? I got a chance to chat with her this spring. Visit my GirlMedia.Com to read it!
The Januaries have designed their own pink shade of lip gloss with Star Crazy dubbed Strawbalicious. Star Crazy is Music For Your Mouth flavored lip glosses designed by rising music stars. Bands like Garbage, Live, Radio Iodine and Veruca Salt have already create their own unique color and you can get them now here. Make sure you mention that you are a Girl Zone reader and you'll get FREE shipping!!!
Amanda Jones Voices Girl Music Records
When I was trying to come up with my new domain name a few years ago for my all girl music site, I first choose GirlMusic.Com. Sadly, the domain was already taken, but I lucked out by getting to know the band who had snapped up that URL, Amanda Jones. Though there are no members named Amanda, this all-girl group has appeared on the Jenny Jones show last year, beating the competition in the talk show's Battle of the Bands contest. With their debut album Voices, Amanda Jones creates a special blend of Pop/Rock sound with great guitar hooks and introspective lyrics. Their title track Voices talks about the positive side of meditation, I think about the day and the sunshine / I site and breathe and I close my eyes so I can see. while Didn't I tackles the issue of a best friend committing suicide, Didn't I, Didn't I care / Wasn't I there / For you any any time / Didn't we swear it's not fair for you to give up on this life?
Amanda Jones is one of the best rising all-girl bands in the USA. You can check out their site here.
It's time for more Must Have albums to check out this summer.

Tara MacLean http://www.taramaclean.com
Passenger Capitol Records |
You might not know her name, but I'm sure you've heard Kendall Payne's song Supermodels as the theme anthem for the Friday night WB series, Popular and Honest from the ABC series Wasteland. You won't find any teeny-bopper pop on the tracks of her debut Jordan's Sister. Kendall keeps things on a personal level we all can relate to in her lyrics, such as Digging deep, I feel my conscience burn / I need to know who and what I am, from the opening song Closer to Myself and I will not be bound by what they tell me I can be / I will not stay silent / I will speak my liberty from Formally Known As. If you like Sarah MacLauchlan, Jewel and Tori Amos, you'll love to curl up and sing along with Kendall Payne.
Tara MacLean and Kendall Payne both teamed up last year to do a tour titled The Girls Room. We know who Kendall is, so now it's time to introduce the woman once called "The Lilith Fair rolled all up in one" (which very could be true seeing that she has played the festival several years in a row). With her big single If I Fall, Tara established herself as a powerful pop songwriter (she plays guitar and piano) and talented singer. The essence of Jewel resonates but there isn't any yodeling going on her album Passengers, just beautiful music that is like Chicken Soup For Your Soul. Both Kendall and Tara have designed together a shimmery gold and coral lip gloss with Star Crazy under the name The Girls Room. Star Crazy is Music For Your Mouth flavored lip glosses designed by rising music stars. Bands like Garbage, Live, Radio Iodine and Veruca Salt have already create their own unique color and you can get them now at http://www.starcrazy.com. Summer's still here, we're still out of school and there's still time to hang out and do all the things we wished we could have done during the school year including expanding your horizons and showing off your musical tastes to your buds. So, Zone Tones has collected more Must Have albums this summer for your listening pleasure.
Fred Savage FanclubJellybeans with Belly Buttons
She's Gone Records
Fred Savage Fanclub isn't an ode to the child star from The Wonder Years. Actually, FSFC is just multi-instrumentalist Sara Radle. FSFC's debut album, Jellybeans with Belly Buttons is similar to listening to a musical diary of the girl next door. Poppy, funny, sad and cute are the only words to describe songs like Whole New Person To Be, Sleep It Off and Run For Cover. FSFC is about as indie as you can get, but while this album is personal enough to be a bedroom recording, it has higher quality then many of the elaborate productions that grace our music stores everyday. Sara pens lyrics like Look at me (baby look at me) / I'm better than you / Hey I'm the best (maybe I'm the best) / Would you like to be like me too? from the tune Just Call Me Blondie and I am writing you this letter knowing it will make me feel better / Forgiving you is the hardest thing I have to do from the quite piano song Insane.
Like I mentioned, Fred Savage Fanclub is very, very indie. Only 500 CDs were pressed of this outstanding album. If there is any CD out there I would like to be in every girl's hand, it's this one. You can visit her website and order yourself a copy. Trust me, it'll be worth it!
