| What Does Your Music Say About You?
Megan Carner |
To many of you, music is an outlet. It is a way to express yourself, unleash emotions and allows you to identify with other people. According to The Ups and Downs of Adolesence magazine, from 7th grade to 12th grade, the average teenager will spend approximately 10,500 hours listening to music. So in devoting this much time to what has been deemed your favorite source of entertainment, the question is: what does your music say about you? Or better yet, what kind of music do you feel best reflects who you are? Check out the chart below to see how your music describes you.
A lot of teen music taste reflects independence from their parents. Think about it: your entire life you’ve been forced to listen to Simon and Garfunkel in the car with your parents. Now you’re finally ready to branch off, become who you really are and can express that in your very own music. As far as expression is concerned, teenagers display their taste in music in everything from band t-shirts, patches on their book bags, tattoos, or the latest craze: personalized ring tones on their cell phones.

An individual, yet trendy. You find you have
the same fashion sense as your friends, but not because you want
to be like them, just because you have similar tastes.

A rocker rebel type. You don't care if you
stand out or if anyone else enjoys the same things you do.
|
Jack Johnson, John Mayer, Dashboard Confessional, or 3LW, Ashanti , Brandy, Lauryn Hill |
The hippie type. Interested in the true meaning
behind lyrics, and expression in the songs.
|
50 Cent, Afroman, Mary J. Blige, Eminem, D12, |
The party animal who loves to dance. More
interested in the beat and sound of your music, not necessarily
to relate to the words.

In a recent survey, teenagers listed that their top reasons to listen to music/watch music video were: to pass time, to provide entertainment, to help deal with anger or hurt emotions, to alleviate loneliness and boredom, and to dance. Whatever your reason, just enjoy it because as John Cusack says in High Fidelity, “it’s not what you’re like, it’s what you like”.
