If you're ready to get your groove on, you may want to pop Martha Redbone's new CD in your player. Martha blends together a mix of R&B, Pop and Soul with her debut album, Home of the Brave, that is described as hardcore in the way that she is hardcore in her ability to enunciate pain and anger through beauty and intelligence.
Her song Boyfriend gets a little funky in the beginning and then moves into a soulful groove as Martha sings about flirting, love, friendship and a guy who currently attached. The other single, Vineyard is a retro track about the desire to be out of life's constraints and to enjoy oneself. Superman has gone on to receive quite a bit of fanfare, recently accepted in an art movie to be released sometime this summer.
Martha released her debut album on Blackfeet Records, a label she founded with songwriting partner, Alex Whitby. She was born in New York City but grew up in Brooklyn and Kentucky, where she gained interest in art, design and music. Martha did not aspire to be a singer but, one fateful day, she was shoved towards a mike to help sing vocals in a studio and the rest is history. (Or should I say, VH1 Behind the Music Part 1?) Expect to see much more coming from Martha in the future.
