If any of you have watched the new TV series Popular, then you may already be familiar with the name Kendall Payne. Her song, Supermodel is the show's theme song, and getting Payne some well deserved attention.
To be perfectly honest, I wasn't expecting much when I listened to her CD, but I was pleasantly surprised. I only say that because I myself had never heard her name or seen the show. I imagined her to be yet another teen pop queen with a boxed, prepackaged sound and a knack for lip synching, but Jordans Sister quickly proved me wrong.
Kendall Payne is just a teen herself, which is why her songs are so easy to relate to and speak so much truth about what it's like to grow up now.. For a teen, however, she is incredibly articulate and introspective. She raises complex and meaningful issues such as the quest for identity and dealing with the loss of a parent in songs like Formerly Known As and Fatherless At 14. She also sings lighthearted and comical songs such as Perfect By Thursday about failed attempts to impress the cute boy in school.
Supermodels is one of my favorites ...It's a very bold, sarcastic song about the unfair and unreasonable beauty standards in today's society.
