Whistle Me Home
by Barbara Wersba
published by Henry Holt
160 pages

When a new boy, TJ Baker, moves into her dismal town, 17-year-old Noli is stricken by him. Enigmatic, sensitive, and handsome as a young god, he could have any girl in his grade. Instead, he chooses her, a tomboyish outsider with alcoholic tendencies.

The couple enjoy sophisticated movies and read poetry together. They exchange thoughtful gifts. Noli can confide in TJ as a true friend, something she's never had. They talk over walks in the woods about issues Noli wouldn't dare to share with her rough mother who just wants her to be more like a normal girl.

But Noli begins to be suspicious of TJ.

They kiss, but TJ has never tried to go farther than that. She is not disappointed at first, reassured by TJ's insistence that he and Noli are like both sides of a single coin. But she does wonder why he wants them to dress alike, like twins.

Noli starts to doubt TJ's ulterior motives, and her own instincts. Slowly, she comes to realize that "TJ is battling demons. There are things inside him that cause him terrible pain, and this knowledge strikes at her heart. By now she knows that he is not perfect, but she would love him any way he was. If he was a criminal, she would love him."

So then why is Noli finally reduced to spying on TJ from the dark?

Whistle Me Home is a fantastic book, a quick but enthralling read. It is captivating to follow Noli and watch her try to overcome her many problems. It makes you wonder if you know any Nolis or TJs, and if something like this could ever happen to you. It makes you realize that things aren't always the way they seem. If you are in the mood for a book that will make you think, I highly recommend Whistle Me Home.
