Where's Walda?

If you're reading this section, you're probably hard to pick out in a crowd. Why is this so? Being one of the gang does offer a certain kind of security, but security doesn't always equal happiness. As a Walda, it's important to ask yourself this: Do I really want to look, act, and think like everyone else? If the answer is no, then you need to take a big time out and decide what needs to change in your life. Don't be afraid of experimenting or hopping outside of your fishbowl. If your friends truly are your friends, they will support you while you figure out who you are and accept the real you in the end. Becoming one in a million might be easier than you think, and listed below are some ideas to get you started:

  • Try out a new hobby. If you've always wanted to play rugby, but were afraid of becoming a tomboy, tell the world to get lost, strap on those cleats and scrum your heart out!
  • Designate one day a week as a "trend-free" day and don't do whatever everyone else is doing.
  • Keep a "Why?" journal. Document what you do, say, feel, and wear for a few days, and then go back a week later with a red pen and write down why you did those things. Hopefully, you'll see that reasons like "so I look thinner" aren't as good as "because it makes me feel good about myself."
  • Make a magazine for yourself of whatever interests you personally. Cut out pictures, write articles, fingerpaint--anything you like. Keep adding to it over time and develop special "issues" for topics you are really interested in. Occasionally look through them to help focus on what's important to you--or share it with a friend. You might be surprised at what you can learn about yourself and others!
