Party of One

Do you feel odd or EVEN better alone?

By Maggie Gusman

Every now and then, you find yourself alone – at a bus stop, in a waiting room, or at home on a Friday night. For some people, this is just a chance to catch up with themselves, to recharge and reorganize. For others, this is a very vulnerable time when they miss the comfort they find in being around others.

In fact, most of our society’s images of someone alone are of seemingly odd people who don't fit in socially or who have closed themselves off from the rest of the world. Aloneness, though CAN be very different, AND very good.

Being alone can be like taking yourself out on a date! Do you think that you could treat yourself the way you want to be treated and have a fun time doing it? Why not take the opportunity (when you are alone) to do the things YOU love or have always really wanted to try that your friends would never agree to do.

Being alone is also a good time to remember what you LIKE about yourself. Being alone gives you the quiet reflective time you need to figure out what you don't like quite so much about yourself too. AND time alone can help you to choose the ways you think you’d like to change and grow.

So how well DO you keep yourself company? Let's find out!

  1. It's Saturday night, and all of your friends have managed to make other plans. You salvage the night by:
    • Making a date with the Keebler Elves.
    • Calling around to see if any of your buddies from kindergarten are free tonight.
    • Popping in your favorite CD, getting a good bubble bath going, and giving yourself a free trip to the Self Spa.
  2. You overhear someone at school describe you as Nice, but kind of a loner. You:
    • Shrug it off.
    • Make a mental note to be a little more outgoing.
    • Entertain thoughts of undergoing a complete makeover and transferring schools.
  3. A group of friends want to go to an amusement park, and have invited you along – but you hate roller coaster rides. Your solution:
    • Try and persuade them to pick another destination – one that doesn't involve being flipped upside-down while going backwards at 60 m.p.h.
    • Take a rain check.
    • Decide that the company is more important than the destination, so you pack a book and a Walkman to chill out in the shade while your buddies ride the Vomit Comet.
  4. The fam is going on a short trip and will be gone all day Saturday. You have the option of staying home or going with. You:
    • Immediately start planning a huge party.
    • Go with -- you don't like the idea of being alone, but like the idea of being grounded for having all your friends over even less.
    • Look forward to having a quiet house all to yourself.
  5. Which of the following animals best describes you?
    • Dog
    • Cat
    • Goldfish
  6. Your impression of a solitary person is:
    • That one crazy lady with 15 cats who lives down the street.
    • Someone with no friends.
    • Someone who might have some really cool hobbies or interests.
  7. You have some free time this evening to do whatever you want. Your choice:
    • To hang out with some friends at the park.
    • Pursue a budding Internet romance with Todd – a self-described weight lifter who looks like Ricky Martin and volunteers at the puppy farm every Tuesday.
    • Cut down the police tape over your bedroom door and try to organize your life a little.
  8. You see a person sitting alone at a restaurant and you think:
    • I wish I could sit alone in a restaurant like that.
    • They must be waiting for someone.
    • They probably got stood up.
  9. You're supposed to meet your best friend at the movies at 8:00. She's ten minutes late. You:
    • Continue waiting out front with that "my best friend's late" look on your face.
    • Decide to wait ten more minutes and then leave.
    • Wait until the movie starts and then buy a ticket and go in, figuring she'll eventually find you.
  10. While visiting the Redwoods National Forest, you have the option of taking a guided tour. You decide to:
    • Grab a copy of the map and enjoy the wilderness on your own terms.
    • Tag along at the way, way end of the tour so that you can stay away from the crowd but also reduce the likelihood of getting lost and becoming a Puma Snack.
    • Take the tour.
  11. A group of scientists offers you $1,000 to live in a cave for three weeks so that they can study the effects of solitary confinement. You:
    • Hold out for more money. Three weeks is a long time.
    • See it as an opportunity to get paid for hanging out for a while.
    • Turn down the offer -- there's no phone.
  12. You really, really want to meet up with a friend of yours this weekend, but she keeps telling you that she would just like some time alone. Your reaction:
    • You back off and try to make plans for next weekend.
    • Ask her is she's feeling OK.
    • Start to wonder if she wants to be your friend.
