It's summertime--time for carefree lazy beach days and soaking up the rays! Whether you are out in the heat, or just want to embrace the relaxed vibe, we have a perfect makeup guide for a natural summer look-- there are those days we need to feel a little extra glam without going overboard. Here are six easy steps to achieve this:
1. Start with Perfecting your Skin
Make sure to cleanse your face every night and use a moisturizer before bed. Studies actually show that is ideal to wash you face just at night and to skip the cleansers in the morning. When you sleep, your body rests and your skin neutralizes towards the optimal pH level. All you need in the morning is a good rinse--this way you don't over secrete oils from over washing.
Other skin tips: Exfoliate your skin a few times a week and make sure to drink plenty of water!
2. Then, Protect and Conceal
With the harsh rays during Summer time it's only sensible to protect your skin with some suncreen! There are some great options out there that are light and non-greasy, such as Neutrogena's line that uses helioplex technology. I have personally used this and it is super light weight on my sensitive skin!
If possible, try to skip foundation all together and opt for concealer instead--much more comfortable in summer heat, and if that's all you really need, why pile on more? If you feel most comfortable with full coverage, opt for a sheer, light foundation such as Bare Minerals.
3. Get a Soft Glow
Lightly brush on a bronzer with some pink or peach undertones alongside your cheekbones, bridge of your nose, and temples. Those are the areas of the face where the sun would naturally hit, so this will give you a very natural glow.
4. Bright Eyes
Start with eyeliner first, and instead of harsh black, opt for brown. Using a kohl or pencil liner, this will blend in better with the whole summery look.
Afterwards, brush on some light, copper eye shadow--one with just a bit of shimmer is ideal. To get a smoky look that is natural, create a horizontal V-shape (think of the "less than" math sign) along the outer corner of your eye with your eye shadow. Then, with a blending brush, blend all that shadow towards the inner corner of your eye. I love using Urban Decay's Naked palette--or a cheaper but still equally good option are Nyx eyeshadows!
Lastly, dust just a smidge of white or ivory eye shadow in the inner corners of your eyes to keep them looking bright and lively.
5. Mascara that Lasts
Go for a water proof mascara to fight the humidity and prevent the dreaded raccoon eye! I use Lancome Hypnose Waterproof Volume Mascara and it works beautifully! Another good alternative that is easier on the wallet is Maybelline Illegal Length Fiber Extensions Waterproof Mascara.
Before applying mascara, use an eyelash curler to get optimal curl and length. When using the curler, don't press firmly into your lashes, as this creates an unwanted crease. You should lightly press at the base of your eyelashes, again at the center, and ever so lightly at the tips.
After that is done, brush on just two coats of mascara to avoid clumps!
6. Juicy Lips
Glide on some lip balm with SPF, and if you wish, use a lip stain or gloss that is more neutral with some warm tones in them. Orange and coral are all the rage this summer.
