Facing School

A Hollywood make-up artist's tips for back to school . . .

Early mornings, crowded hallways, textbooks, cafeteria food. Yep, it's Back to School! But don't panic. We've enlisted the help of Hollywood make-up artist Tarra Day to take you from beach babe to studious hottie. Tarra has painted many Hollywood faces - Denise Richards, Amanda Peet, Jaime Pressly to name a few - and is most recently known for her work on the set of this summer's hot surfer flick Blue Crush, starring Kate Bosworth and Michelle Rodriguez. Tarra shares some surefire tips to make last year's crush take notice of this year's you.

From beach to books. . .
Enhance your face without using too much makeup. Play up the last of your tan with a bronzer (try jane Cosmetics' Glow Goddess in Sunny which also adds a touch of shimmer). No tan? Brush some blush lightly over the apples of your cheeks. It will enhance cheekbones and give you some color.

It's all about the eyes. . .
One important thing to remember is to keep your eyebrows nicely manicured and maintained. Natural looking brows are a must - and sets the stage for applying eyeshadow. Put iridescent colors wherever you want to catch the light, usually on the top of the lid and along the brow bone (try jane's iced shadows in Bashful and Sugared). Then add a taupe color in the crease to give a little contrast. Right now, you can't go wrong with shimmery and iridescent neutrals. Finally, add some definition to lashes with a coat of black mascara (try jane's fan club mascara in Blackest Curl).

Get creative. . .
Mix some of your favorite shades together for a personalized touch. Using your fingers is a great way to apply your foundation. I like applying cream blush with my fingertips - dab it and blend it a little bit. Dabbing and blending helps give you a natural look.

For lips . . .
Use a nude gloss (try jane's fabulizer for lips in Pout or Mouthy or jane's glossy gloss in Clearly Pink ) to achieve a sheer look with a hint of color.

Blue Crush is an amazing surfer movie (the one artist Tarra Day above recently did the make-up for), AND the surfer is a GIRL!!! That's right, a girl. 'Bout time, don't cha think? Kate Bosworth plays Anne Marie, a girl who is under enormous pressure as she competes in the Pipe Masters on the North Shore of Oahu. After all surfing is one of the world's most dangerous, aggressive AND male-dominated sports, but Anne's biggest problem is the pressure she feels from within. Check out the Blue Crush site for more about the movie including hot shots, surfing tips, the history of surfing, a fun you-call-the-surf-move interactive and MORE! You can download stickers, tattoos and iron-ons from Blue Crush's SCOPE IT OUT section and get tips from the pros and increase your surf I.Q. in their SURFING TIPS section.
