Cristyn Stone, 14 years old, would rather spend her summer safely at home in Ohio. Instead she ends up halfway around the world in Wales in a creepy old house -- living with strangers and some ghosts.

Her father, a professor of medieval studies, needs to do research in the town of Dolwyddelan, in the middle of a region filled with old medieval castles. Cristyn is afraid her summer will be very boring without her friends, TV, and shopping malls. To make things worse, she and her father have to share their rental house with another family who have their own set of problems.

Soon, strange things start to happen. Ghostlike visions appear in the basement...Why is there such sadness here?

When they arrive at the 16th century stone house, her father has a strange feeling about the place. It seems very familiar to him -- incredibly similar to a picture his wife (Cristyn's mother) kept in her room before her death. Soon, spooky things start to happen. Ghostlike visions appear in the basement. Cristyn has strange realistic dreams. Secret passages appear and objects mysteriously move about. Why is there such sadness here?

This book is a great ghost story and explains some interesting history of old castles in this area of Wales. At the same time, Cristyn learns things about her own family history and how making new friends can be more fun than she expects. The author has a way of writing as if she were talking to you. You feel as if you are right there with Cristyn in the mysterious old stone house experiencing her sadness and fear along with her. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes suspense, mystery and discovering new relationships.
