What is sexual assault?

When sexual contact happens without your consent. This includes rape, same-sex assault, child molestation, incest, and any forced touching of a person's genital area. It is considered sexual assault when someone does one or all of the following:

  • Exposes his genitals to you
  • Masturbates in front of you
  • Forces or tricks you to pose for   photos with sexual connotations
  • Makes sexual threats towards you
  • Touches your genitals, buttocks, breasts, or inner thighs.

More tips on prevention

When walking

  • Walk with others whenever possible
  • If you are walking alone, do so in a well-lit area, away from bushes and doorways.
  • If you are being followed, don't go home, go to the nearest public place and call the police.
  • Don't hitchhike

At home

  • Lock the doors and windows when you are home alone
  • If you come home and find a door or window open, don't go in.
  • Go directly to a neighbor's house and call 911.
  • Don't let strangers in the house -- check who is at the door through a peep hole or window before you open it.

In a car

  • Lock the doors
  • Have your keys ready when approaching the car
  • Park in a well-lit area
  • If your car breaks down, open the hood and stay inside the locked car.
  • If someone offers to help, ask him to call the police.

If you are attacked

  • If he has a weapon, try to convince him to put it down
  • If he does not have a weapon, scream "fire" or "police"
  • If you can get away, run toward people or a public place
  • Report the experience to the police
