Fall Fashion Inspiration
By Sara Rowe
It’s back to school time, which means it’s also time for back to school fashion. Stores are already full of clothing that they think they can get you to buy just because they are the new “in” styles. But are you a leader or a follower? Do you wear something just because someone else, whether it is some fashion designer or the most popular girl in your school, says it’s cool?

If you truly want to be in style (your own style, that is) there are four things to keep in mind:
- Be comfortable. This may seem like a no brainer, but really only wear what you are comfortable in. If a certain fabric makes your skin crawl when you try it on or you can’t walk in 3-inch heels to save your life, don’t buy them. Anything that bunches, is too tight, or is hot or itchy you shouldn’t buy. If it doesn’t look or feel right in the dressing room, think about having to wear it for an entire day! However, it is sometimes possible to make an outfit you love work for you. If the stores are full of mini skirts and tight pants that ride up on you or make you feel chubby, go for a bigger size in the same pants or layer a mini skirt over pants or leggings. Layering can not only make an outfit last through more then one season, but can also help you control how much skin you want to show.
- Fit your clothes to your personality. Take a look at what is already in your closet. What patterns and colors are your favorites? Do you have a more sporty style or are you more comfortable in classic, preppy clothing? Are you bold, crazy and loud? Choose clothing in bold, bright colors and unusual fabrics and patterns. Are you into saving the environment? Wear eco friendly clothing and t-shirts with fun environmental messages. Let your clothing and accessories be an expression of yourself, your personality and your interests.
- Mix and match. If you have a small budget for back to school shopping, this is especially important to remember. Buy outfits that go together and match other pieces that you already have. Don’t buy any piece of clothing without first making sure that have something to wear with it, or you might end up with something that just hangs useless in your closet. If your school has a dress code, bring a copy of it with you shopping so that you can make sure you can actually wear your purchases to school.
- And last but not least, don’t ever buy a piece of clothing that you don’t love. It doesn’t matter if it is the newest style or is what everybody else is wearing. If you don’t love it, don’t buy it.
But what exactly are the new styles that you will be seeing in stores this fall? Although you shouldn’t be an obsessed trend follower, there’s nothing wrong with fitting some of fall’s new offerings into your wardrobe.
Colors: Think leaves and earthy tones. Popular color offerings this fall include deep reds and purples, bright green, grays, black and browns.
Fabrics: Warm and comfy are the words! Jersey, fleece, woolens, cashmere style fabric and thick knits will be popular.
Continuing Trends: Leggings, long tunic tops, wide legged pants and ballet flats are still also going strong from previous seasons.
New Styles: Early 90s grunge with a music and technology focus will be reemerging with a vengeance this season. Trapeze dresses and shirts will be popular, although they won’t work for every body type (style has been compared to a shapeless bag). Shirts and dresses will feature unique sleeve details, feminine puffs, ruffles, bows, lace and flowery, girly prints. Styles also will be influenced by the enormously popular TV show Gossip Girl. Expect to see a lot of preppy offerings, such as blazers, cardigans, kilts and polos. Plaid will also be very popular this season. The two main characters of the show, fussy and sophisticated Blair and bohemian and laidback
Serena, are also likely to influence clothing for teen girls created this season, as many girls are eager to imitate their styles.
