You need a gift for your mom...
Whether it's her birthday or Mother's Day or whatever, it's time to get a gift for your mom. Is your mom picky? Mine is. She likes nice things, and I do mean NICE things. My budget doesn't begin to cover her taste! So what do I do? I do one of two things...
I either buy her a very small, very expensive present like a tiny travel bottle of her favorite, but very costly perfume
OR
I make something or do something for her that she adores because she can tell that I am thinking about HER!
Remember when you were really little and you could make your mom a dish out of clay that was impossibly ugly and fit to be used only as an ashtray (even though your mom doesn't smoke), and your mom positively GUSHED over how much she loved it cause YOU made it?
Well, darlin', those days are OVER!
You're a big girl now and your gifts need to mean something. Sure, your mom will appreciate the fact that you spent some of YOUR money on her, and yes, she will undoubtedly also appreciate the thought, but let's face it... she really wants to like her gift! It's only fair. We all want our moms to get us stuff WE like too! So... here's some advice on how to afford a gift that will make your mom happy. (If you are a girl with scads of spending money -- READ ON cause you can spend BIG BUCKS and still not make your mom smile!)
The Card
Moms like cards. Moms also usually have VERY specific ideas about what kind of
cards they like. Some moms are totally into the funny, gag kind of cards. Other
moms ADORE the mushy, I love you, hearts and flowers kind of cards, and
some moms don't think a card is a real card unless you make it yourself!
The point? Find out which kind of card your mom likes and get her THAT kind. Try to remember how she reacted to the cards you've given her in the past... Which cards made her GUSH with happiness? Get her that kind!
Cards can be VERY expensive. If your mom is into those giant mushy cards that are handmade by somebody else with pressed flowers in them and the whole works... you may want to blow your cash on a great card and then make your mom a gift, which leads us to...
The Gift
Making a gift isn't as hard as it seems. If you are crafty and know how to make
something your mom will love, you are way in luck. You know... you knit, your
mom loves sweaters. Like that. But you can spend just a little money and get
your mom a version of something expensive that she really loves. Here are some
examples:
Your mom adores fresh cut flowers. The long stemmed expensive kind.
You buy her some bulbs, find out how to force them so that she can have beautiful flowers growing inside. You can force them for her or give her beautifully written (maybe even illustrated) directions on how to do it.
OR
You buy several packets of seeds of beautiful flowers that your mother will love. You start the seeds indoors in paper cups or whatever and give your mom a card or certificate that says that you will plant, water, and weed until there are beautiful flowers in your yard for your mom to cut and bring into the house whenever she wants to.
Your mom loves jewelry. Real gold, real silver, real diamonds. AND she loves beautiful handmade artsy stuff too -- the kind that costs LOTS of cash.
You buy a book on using Fimo to make beads and other jewelry. You take your mom to the store and let her pick out several different colors of clay. The two of you create jewelry together. You'll get to remember the fun you had together every time either of you wears the stuff you've made.
Your mom loves theater and any kind of live performance.
You talk to your dad and offer to buy your mom's ticket to a special show that she wants to see. Your dad pays for his ticket!
OR
You scan the papers and find a community theater or college group that is putting on a play that is one your mother particularly likes and you get tickets for both of you to go see it!
Money can buy a lot of things, BUT it can not buy memories. If you try to create a memory for your mom, it will be a gift that she can enjoy over and over for years to come AND so can you! Good luck. Hope you manage to make your mother smile...
