Recently both a male and female friend forwarded me an online story.  The Internet has become one of the biggest ways to communicate ideas and information. It has a powerful influence on the way the world views girls and women. And it's not just what you see when you cruise around and visit specific sites: it's also what comes zinging across the internet to you. Here's what my friends sent...

An English professor wrote the words, "Woman without her man is nothing" on the blackboard and directed his students to punctuate it correctly.

The men wrote:
"Woman, without her man, is nothing."

The women wrote:
"Woman! Without her, man is nothing."

You gotta love it!

I realize that the first one is a major groaner, but that second one is a just a tad overblown, don't you think!? The point here is that getting all this stuff on the Web is great because it makes you think, but make sure you DO think. Don't fall victim to over-reaction or gross generalizations. Go ahead, have that first BIG response. Get angry. Laugh. Even get depressed. Then...SNAP out of it and use your brain girl!

You can do it. Reacting to what you see on the Web is great practice for screening EVERYTHING that you hear, read, and see about girls and women. It's always okay to have a reaction, especially to the Web. Usually there's no one to see or hear how wigged out you get! Just remember, don't stop there. Girls and women everywhere are counting on you to show the world that we CAN think. Use any emotions you feel to power your thoughts. Get constructive. Learn to discuss your point of view with intelligence and integrity. Good luck!
