Welcome to FEMedia -- the place where girls can read about how the world views and defines women and girls.

PRETTY ON THE INSIDES

Finally an art show that highlights a young female artist AND celebrates true beauty while exposing the scary media-driven images of beauty that are out there!

If you live anywhere near Cleveland, Ohio, you might have been lucky enough to see this exhibit. If not check out the web sites of the workshop presenters listed below and read on to join with Girl Zone in applauding this wonderful happening!

During January and part of February 2000, the Cleveland Center for Contemporary Art was proud to host the exhibition, Pretty on the Insides by Christa Donner.

You don’t usually see fashion magazine images right next to medical images. Pretty on the Insides explores the fine line between beauty and health.

This exhibit was part of the Wendy L. Moore Emerging Artist series. The series honors young, female artists in the Northeastern Ohio region by mounting their first solo exhibition and producing an accompanying full color catalogue.

Christa Donner, the artist for Pretty on the Insides takes images from fashion magazines and puts them with medical images. The accompanying catalog features essays by BUST magazine co-founders, Marcelle Karp and Debbie Stoller.

Debbie Stoller was also one of the guest speakers at a conference that ran as a complement to Christa's work. It was called Insides Out: A Conference for the Girl in You. Insides Out was a weekend of art and activism for high school and college-aged young women.

Ophira Edut (editor of Adios Barbie: Young Women Write About Beauty and Body Image) and Gloria Jacobs (Senior Editor at Ms. Magazine) shared their insights on the image and messages they send to young women, and health organizations such as Planned Parenthood of Greater Cleveland will lead interactive workshops on related issues.

It sounds like these people know what's really important. Girl Zone says Way to go!
