Welcome to FEMedia -- the place where girls can read about how the world views and defines women and girls.

Broad Casting!?

Ever notice the women who are on news programs? They all look young and thin and their hair is just so.  Ever notice the men? Some are thin. Some are heavy. Some are old. Some are young. AND some are even balding.

What's up with that?

Is the message here that male newscasters should be believed no matter what they look like and that women are only smart if they are pretty?  Or is the message that woman who face the public MUST meet the media's warped and tiny definition of pretty?

No matter what the reason, this is definitely NOT equal treatment. Sure, it has gotten better over the last few years, but not by much. Some women have actually sued broadcasting companies for firing them due to their age.

They shouldn't have to sue to get equal treatment!!!

I was thinking about all of this the other day as I tuned into some news broadcasts that were not from the US... Guess what? The women didn't all look the same! They all seemed attractive to me, but they weren't all the usual stereotype. Check it out! If you get any foreign news, see if you agree that other countries have the jump on us when it comes to choosing many kinds of women to be in front of the camera.

Most of television's main sitcom and drama characters still fit the media stereotype as well, but things are changing. Slowly...

Hopefully in your lifetime, all kinds of women will be both in front of and behind the camera.
