3 Mindful Tips Using Your Senses



Mindfulness is the understanding and recognition of all that is happening right now – in this moment. By using your senses, you can explore what each sense is experiencing and invite yourself to be present with each sensation. 


Tip #1 --- Life goes by so quickly and we don’t always take the time to truly enjoy the food we’re eating.  One way to practice mindfulness is to bring your attention to the food you’re eating.  You can do this with a snack or with a big meal.  All you have to do is heighten your awareness around the food you’re consuming.  A peach, for example, has a fuzzy, soft texture on its skin, but is soft and juicy inside.  By taking time to use your senses and explore the fruit, you will have no choice but to be present.  


Tip #2 ---Take some time and sit in a comfortable position in your room.  Listen to a favorite song with your eyes closed.  Bring your focus to the vocals then to the guitar strings.  See if you can choose a single instrument and focus solely on that instrument and the sound it’s producing.  It’s okay if your mind wanders!  That’s totally fine.  When you notice it has, just gently bring it back and focus on the sounds you are hearing.  


Tip #3 ---Take a walk outside and bring your awareness to the various colors, shades, objects and textures that surround you.  Whether you live in a big city or a rural countryside, there are always different sights to take in.  Use your walk as an opportunity to be present.  When you notice a thought come in, shift your gaze to another color.  Again, no need to judge yourself for thinking.  Our thoughts come and go 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Instead, just notice the thought and bring your attention back to the color or object you are looking at.
